DESCRIPTION:Our STEAM program focuses on the diversity and beauty of the Central and Eastern Kentucky landscape. Students ages 5 to 18 are divided into relevant mixed-age learning pods where they engage in age-appropriate content and activities. During each season\, classes dive into a natural-sciences unit (Geology\, Ecology\, Ornithology\, etc.)\, with each hands-on lesson incorporating child-led exploration\, data collection\, nature journaling and reflection.\nAs with all of our forest school programs\, our STEAM program emphasizes the importance of free play within mixed-aged groups. Child-led free play promotes a suite of executive-function skills\, such as communication\, teamwork\, problem solving\, game creation\, compassion\, child-led exploration\, and more. \nAll learners\, including homeschooled and public-schooled students\, are welcome to attend.\nClasses meet from 10am-1pm and are under the care and supervision of their teacher during this time. Students should pack a lunch and snacks to eat during class. Students are then returned to their caregiver&rsquo\;s supervision for free play from 1-3pm. Caregivers are asked to remain on-site for the duration of the day\; this is not a drop-off program. Siblings younger than 5 are invited to stay on site with their parents.\n\n\nMembers: $305 for first child\, $165 per additional child ages 5+\nNon-Members: $340 for first child\, $185 per additional child ages 5+\nTuition assistance information is available here. DESCRIPTION:Trailblazers is a drop-off program for ages 7+ that aims to build comfort in the outdoors through skill-building. We practice orienteering\, map-making\, shelter-building\, fire-making\, basic first-aid\, leave-no-trace principles\, and other bushcrafting skills. Additionally\, we weave in education around cultural and historical trailblazers with discussions about the impact of Indigenous cultures and Appalachian environmental leaders. Students will build a love of place for Appalachia and gain a deeper compassion and understanding for the flora\, fauna\, and culture of our region. Students will also help with trail maintenance on the campus and must be willing to walk with a backpack that can carry their food and water for the day.\nNote: This class will involve a lot of walking through sometimes rough terrain. Students must demonstrate a willingness to adhere to important safety protocols\, listen with respect to the instructor\, and stay with the group.\n\n\nMembers: $525 for first child\, $495 per additional child\nNon-Members: $585 for first child\, $555 per additional child\nTuition assistance information is available here. DESCRIPTION:Rock climbing is a great way to test your physical and mental limits in a relatively low-risk way. Climbers learn how to push past fear\, build resilience and perseverance\, improve motor skills and balance\, and build strength in a compassionate\, low-pressure environment. Climbers also have the opportunity to learn skills like knot tying and belaying. This activity is appropriate for ages 3+.\n\nClimbing for a Cure is a partnership program with the PFIC Advocacy and Resource Network. PFIC stands for Progressive Familial Intrahepatic Cholestasis\, which is a rare genetic (inherited) disorder that causes progressive liver disease that typically leads to liver failure. Climbing for a Cure helps raise money and awareness for this rare disease that currently has no cure. One of Red Oaks&rsquo\; very first members\, who has grown up in our community\, suffers from the disease. You can learn more about PFIC here.\n\nMore Info: https://www.redoaksforestschool.org/climbing-for-a-cure\n\nLocation:\n\nRed River Gorge \n\n
